The Denver Nuggets are a professional basketball team based in Denver, competing in the NBA as part of the Western Conference's Northwest Division. Originally founded in 1967 as the Denver Larks, the team was a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA). ABA co-founder Dennis Murphy had considered the name "Denver Lark Buntings," but the team ultimately became the Rockets due to an ownership change involving the owners of Ringsby Rocket Truck Lines. In 1974, the franchise adopted the name Nuggets in preparation for its move from the ABA to the NBA. Following the name change, the Nuggets reached the ABA's final championship in 1976, but were defeated by the New York Nets.

The Denver Nuggets have experienced several successful periods throughout their history, including making the ABA playoffs in every season except 1971 and 1974, and reaching the 1976 ABA Finals, where they lost to the New York Nets. Following the ABA-NBA merger in 1976, the Nuggets joined the NBA and qualified for the playoffs in nine consecutive seasons during the 1980s, as well as ten straight seasons from 2004 to 2013. In 2023, led by Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray, the Nuggets reached their first NBA Finals and defeated the Miami Heat to win the franchise's first NBA championship. They were the last of the four surviving former ABA teams to reach the NBA Finals and the second to win an NBA title, following the San Antonio Spurs. The Nuggets play their home games at Ball Arena, which they share with the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL and the Colorado Mammoth of the NLL.
