Sabalenka rose to prominence in 2017 when she and Aliaksandra Sasnovich helped the Belarus Fed Cup team reach the final, despite both players being ranked outside the top 75 at the time. She finished 2018 and 2019 ranked No. 11 in the world in singles. After reaching two major singles semifinals in 2021, Sabalenka achieved a career-high world No. 2 ranking. However, she struggled to maintain that level of success consistently in 2022. In 2023, she claimed her first Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open and ascended to the world No. 1 ranking, later being named the ITF World Champion for the year. She successfully defended her Australian Open title in 2024 and won the US Open, securing the year-end No. 1 ranking.

Sabalenka also started competing regularly in doubles in 2019. Partnering with Elise Mertens, she quickly found success, winning the Sunshine Double (Indian Wells and Miami) that year. After capturing the US Open doubles title later in the season, she qualified for the WTA Finals for the first time. In 2021, she won the Australian Open doubles title, which propelled her to world No. 1 in doubles. Following this achievement, Sabalenka focused primarily on her singles career.

Known for her aggressive playing style, Sabalenka often hits a high number of winners and unforced errors. Her height gives her a powerful serve, adding to her aggressive game.
