After retiring, he transitioned into coaching at Preston, eventually becoming assistant manager and later taking over as manager in 1998. Moyes succeeded Walter Smith as Everton manager in March 2002. Under his leadership, the club achieved a fourth-place finish in the 2004–05 league season, their highest position since 1988, and qualified for the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds the following season, marking their first appearance in the competition since 1970–71. Moyes also guided Everton to a runner-up finish in the 2008–09 FA Cup, their best performance in the tournament since winning it in 1995. During his tenure, Everton consistently finished between fifth and eighth in the league. By the time of his departure, Moyes had been the longest-serving current manager in the Premier League, with 11 years and 3 months in charge, trailing only Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger.
