The Warriors claimed the first-ever Basketball Association of America (BAA) championship in 1947 and won again in 1956, led by Hall of Famers Paul Arizin, Tom Gola, and Neil Johnston. After trading away star Wilt Chamberlain in January 1965, the team finished the 1964–65 season with the NBA's worst record (17–63). However, their rebuilding was quick, as they drafted Rick Barry just a few months later. Barry, alongside Jamaal Wilkes, helped lead the Warriors to their third championship in 1975, a victory that remains one of the most significant upsets in NBA history.
The Warriors faced struggles in the 1980s but became playoff contenders in the early 1990s with stars Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin, forming the iconic "Run TMC" trio. In 2015, led by Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, the team returned to championship form. The following year, they set an NBA record with a 73–9 regular-season record, only to lose the Finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games. After adding former MVP Kevin Durant, the Warriors won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. They fell short in the 2019 Finals to the Toronto Raptors, and Durant left that offseason. After missing the playoffs for two seasons, the Warriors bounced back and defeated the Boston Celtics in the 2022 Finals. Over the course of their dynasty, the Warriors have won four championships in eight years and reached five consecutive Finals from 2015 to 2019 (six Finals in an eight-year span).
Nicknamed the "Dubs" as a shorthand for "W's," the Warriors hold multiple NBA records, including the best regular-season record, the most wins in a season (combining both regular season and postseason), and the best postseason run. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are widely regarded as two of the greatest backcourt players in NBA history. The Warriors rank third in both NBA championships and Finals appearances, trailing only the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. Wilt Chamberlain and Stephen Curry have each won the NBA MVP award while playing for the Warriors, with a total of three MVPs.
