After high school, Vance enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he served as a military journalist from 2003 to 2007, including a six-month deployment to Iraq in 2005. He graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in 2009 and earned his law degree from Yale Law School in 2013. Vance briefly practiced corporate law before transitioning to the tech industry as a venture capitalist. His memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, was published in 2016 and later adapted into a film in 2020.
In 2022, Vance won Ohio's United States Senate race, defeating Democratic nominee Tim Ryan. Although he initially opposed Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential bid, Vance became a staunch Trump supporter during his first term. In July 2024, Trump selected Vance as his running mate ahead of the Republican National Convention. Vance resigned from the Senate in early 2025 to prepare for assuming the vice presidency. At 40 years old, he will be the third-youngest vice president in U.S. history and the first born in the Millennial generation.
Vance is often described as a national conservative and right-wing populist, identifying himself as part of the postliberal right. His political views include opposition to gun control, abortion, same-sex marriage, and U.S. military aid to Ukraine. Vance is also a vocal critic of childlessness and has acknowledged the influence of Catholic theology on shaping his sociopolitical beliefs.
