Born and raised in Stevenage, Lewis Hamilton began his racing career at the age of six in karting, where he won several national titles and caught the attention of Ron Dennis, who signed him to the McLaren-Mercedes Young Driver Programme in 1998. After triumphing in the Karting World Cup and European Championship in 2000, Hamilton moved up to junior formulas, where he achieved success by winning the Formula 3 Euro Series and the GP2 Series. In 2007, he joined McLaren, becoming the first Black driver to compete in Formula One at the Australian Grand Prix. In his rookie season, Hamilton won four Grands Prix and set numerous records, finishing just one point behind Kimi Räikkönen in a dramatic title fight. He clinched his first World Championship in 2008 with a memorable last-lap overtake in the final race of the season, becoming the youngest-ever World Drivers' Champion at the time. During his next four seasons at McLaren, Hamilton faced dominance from the Red Bull-Renault combination, but still secured multiple race wins, including a thrilling four-way title battle in 2010.
Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013, partnering with his former karting teammate Nico Rosberg and ending his 15-year stint with McLaren. After securing his first win with the team at the Hungarian Grand Prix, new engine regulations were introduced the following season, allowing Mercedes to become the dominant force in Formula One. Over the next three seasons, Hamilton and Rosberg won 51 of 59 Grands Prix amid their intense rivalry, famously dubbed The Silver War. Hamilton won the titles in 2014 and 2015, while Rosberg claimed the 2016 championship. Following Rosberg's retirement, Hamilton twice overcame mid-season point deficits to Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari, securing his fourth and fifth titles in 2017 and 2018. Hamilton...
Hamilton secured his sixth title in 2019, then broke several records during his 2020 campaign, including setting the all-time win record at the Portuguese Grand Prix, equaling Michael Schumacher's seven World Drivers' Championships. In 2021, he became the first driver to surpass 100 race wins and pole positions, finishing as runner-up to Max Verstappen in a controversial season finale. After winless campaigns in 2022 and 2023, Hamilton claimed his record-breaking ninth British Grand Prix victory in 2024, marking his twelfth and final season with Mercedes. In 2025, he signed with Ferrari.
Hamilton has played a key role in expanding Formula One’s global appeal, attracting a wider audience beyond traditional motorsport fans, partly due to his high-profile lifestyle and activism on environmental and social issues. He is also a vocal advocate for racial justice and greater diversity in motorsport. In 2020, Hamilton was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people globally, and in 2021, he was knighted in the New Year Honours.
