The Washington Commanders are a professional American football team located in the Washington metropolitan area. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as part of the NFC East division. The team plays its home games at FedExField in Landover, Maryland, while its headquarters and training facility are in Ashburn, Virginia. Having played over 1,300 games, the Commanders have secured more than 600 victories. The team is known for being one of the first NFL franchises to adopt a fight song, "Hail to the Commanders," which is performed by their marching band after each touchdown at home games. The Commanders are owned by a group led by Josh Harris, who purchased the team from Daniel Snyder in 2023 for $6.05 billion.

The team was established by George Preston Marshall as the Boston Braves in 1932. It changed its name to the Redskins in 1933, then relocated to Washington, D.C., becoming the Washington Redskins in 1937. The term "Redskin" sparked controversy for many years. In 2020, following pressure from NFL sponsors and wider social movements spurred by the George Floyd protests, the name was retired amid growing awareness of the Native American mascot debate. The team played as the Washington Football Team for two seasons before rebranding as the Commanders in 2022.
