The Australian Open usually begins in mid-January and runs for two weeks, with the men's final traditionally taking place on the last Sunday of the month. The tournament features men's and women's singles, men's, women's, and mixed doubles, juniors' championships, wheelchair events, legends competitions, and exhibition matches.

Originally played on grass courts until 1987, the tournament has since seen three types of hardcourt surfaces: green Rebound Ace until 2007, blue Plexicushion from 2008 to 2019, and, since 2020, blue GreenSet. First held in 1905 as the Australasian Championships, the Australian Open has grown to become one of the largest sporting events in the Southern Hemisphere. Known as "the happy slam," it is the highest-attended Grand Slam, with over 1.1 million spectators at the 2024 tournament, including qualifying rounds. The Australian Open was also the first Grand Slam to introduce indoor play during extreme weather, thanks to retractable roofs on its three primary courts: Rod Laver Arena, John Cain Arena, and the refurbished Margaret Court Arena.

Renowned for its fast-paced, aggressive play, the tournament has been hosted at Melbourne Park since 1988 and is a significant contributor to the Victorian economy. In 2020, it injected A$387.7 million into the state's economy. Over the previous decade, the Australian Open contributed more than A$2.71 billion in economic benefits to Victoria, creating 1,775 jobs, mainly in the accommodation and hospitality sectors.
