Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a common respiratory virus that belongs to the pneumoviridae family, which also includes the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
If infected with HMPV, you may experience mild cold-like symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, a runny nose, or a sore throat, typically lasting a few days. Although rare, more severe symptoms can occur, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems or other risk factors. While anyone can contract the virus, it is most common in young children and older adults.
Dutch scientists made the discovery over 20 years ago, but recent research reveals that it has been a source of respiratory infections worldwide for more than 50 years.
By the age of 5, most individuals have contracted human metapneumovirus (HMPV). However, (HMPV) can pose greater risks to infants under 6 months, adults over 65, and those with weakened immune systems. (Photo Credit: iStock/Getty Images)
