He played college football at Ohio State, where he earned consensus All-American honors, and was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft. During his four years with the Steelers, he served primarily as a reserve player before signing with the New England Patriots as a free agent in 2001. There, he earned a larger role and became a key contributor to their defense. Over his eight seasons with the Patriots, Vrabel won three Super Bowl titles and was named a First-team All-Pro. Known for his versatility, he made history by scoring a receiving touchdown in both Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl XXXIX, becoming the only primarily defensive player to score in two Super Bowls. Throughout his career, he recorded 12 receptions (regular season and playoffs), each one a touchdown. Vrabel concluded his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, retiring after the 2010 season.

After retiring as a player following the 2010 season, Vrabel was the linebackers and defensive line coach at Ohio State for three seasons. His NFL coaching career began in 2014 with the Houston Texans as linebackers coach and then defensive coordinator, before becoming the head coach of the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023. He was fired by the Titans on January 9, 2024. Following his departure from the Titans, Vrabel was hired as a coaching and personnel consultant for the Cleveland Browns in the 2024 offseason.

Following his single season as a consultant with the Browns, Vrabel was hired by the Patriots to be their 16th head coach in franchise history.
