The Texans were established in 1999 and were owned by Bob McNair until his passing in 2018. After his death, his wife, Janice McNair, assumed majority ownership of the team. Cal McNair, the McNairs' son, took over as the operating head of the franchise and became the principal owner when Janice transferred ownership to him in 2024. The Texans replaced Houston's previous NFL team, the Houston Oilers, who played from 1960 to 1996 before relocating to Nashville and eventually becoming the Tennessee Titans. As an expansion team, the Texans began play in 2002, making them the youngest franchise currently in the NFL.
Although the Texans faced challenges in the 2000s, their fortunes improved in the 2010s, highlighted by their first division championship in 2011 and their initial playoff appearance. They went on to win seven more AFC South division titles in 2012, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2023, and 2024. However, they remain the only NFL franchise to have never won a road playoff game and the only team to have never appeared in a conference championship game. The Texans are also one of four franchises, alongside the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, and division rival Jacksonville Jaguars, that has never appeared in a Super Bowl.
As of August 2022, the Houston Texans were ranked the 11th richest team in the NFL, with an estimated value of $4.7 billion, according to Forbes.
Following the Texas Rangers' 2023 World Series victory, the Texans became the only major professional sports franchise in Texas without a championship.
