The Baltimore Ravens were founded in 1996 after Art Modell, the owner of the Cleveland Browns, announced in 1995 that he planned to relocate the franchise from Cleveland to Baltimore. As part of a settlement between the NFL and the city of Cleveland, Modell was required to leave the Browns' history, team colors, and records behind for a new team set to resume play in 1999. In exchange, he was permitted to take his own personnel and team to Baltimore, where they formed an expansion team. The Ravens are currently owned by Steve Bisciotti and were valued at $4.63 billion in 2023, making them the 28th-most valuable sports franchise in the world.
Since their inception, the Ravens have been one of the most successful NFL franchises, boasting a regular season record of 268–199–1 (.574), the best winning percentage among active teams. They also hold the fourth-highest playoff winning percentage at 17–13 (.567). The team has made 16 playoff appearances since 2000, capturing two Super Bowl titles (Super Bowl XXXV and Super Bowl XLVII), two AFC Championship titles (2000 and 2012), and five AFC divisional titles.
Championship game appearances (2000, 2008, 2011, 2012, and 2023), and eight AFC North division titles (2003, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2018, 2019, 2023 and 2024). They are one of two teams to be undefeated in multiple Super Bowl appearances, along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Ravens organization was led by general manager Ozzie Newsome from 1996 until his retirement following the 2018 season, and has had three head coaches: Ted Marchibroda, Brian Billick, and since 2008, John Harbaugh. Starting with a record-breaking defensive performance in their 2000 season, the Ravens have established a reputation for strong defensive play throughout team history. Former players such as middle linebacker Ray Lewis, safety Ed Reed, and offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden have been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
