Tamworth was the main center of royal power in the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia during the 8th and 9th centuries. It is home to a modest yet prominent 12th-century castle, the well-preserved medieval Church of St Editha, and a Moat House. Historically, Tamworth was split between Warwickshire and Staffordshire until 1889, when it was fully incorporated into Staffordshire.

The town's industries include logistics, engineering, clothing, and the production of bricks, tiles, and paper. Until 2001, Tamworth was also known for housing Reliant, a manufacturer of the Reliant Robin three-wheeler car and the Reliant Scimitar sports car.

The Snowdome, featuring a real-snow indoor ski slope, is located in Tamworth. Just 1.7 miles (2.7 km) to the south is Drayton Manor Theme Park, as well as one of the many marinas serving the Coventry Canal and the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal, which converge south of the town.
